The founders of the Violence Prevention Institute have specialist expertise and experience in preventing, mitigating and managing violence.

Dr Samara McPhedran is an internationally recognised expert in gender-based and other violence, homicide, suicide, and mental health. She is an experienced leader who has held executive roles across the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Holding qualifications in psychology and law, Samara has worked extensively in legislative and policy design and evaluation. She has a track record of providing evidence-based recommendations to decision-makers to guide systems improvement and has served on a number of high-level advisory groups, including state and federal Ministerial panels.

Sene Hicks is a practising psychologist with post-graduate training in criminology and criminal justice. She has worked with forensic and clinical populations including both perpetrators and victims of violence, in custodial settings as well as in the community. Sene has significant experience engaging with individuals and front-line organisations and agencies to manage and modify challenging behaviours and comorbid presentations of violence, self-harm, addictions, trauma and complex mental health. She has designed and led intervention programs for high-risk violent offenders and served as an independent expert assessor for various courts and tribunals.
